FAQ's

What is Decongestive Lymphoedema therapy?

Decongestive Lymphoedema Therapy includes 5 pillars of treatment, nl:

1. Compression bandages or garments

2. Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage or MLD

3. Skin care and infection control

4. Exercise and nutrition

5. Modifications to daily activities

What is the difference between Lymphoedema and Oedema?

Oedema is usually caused by excess tissue fluid that had not yet returned to the circulatory system. Lymphoedema is swelling caused by excess protein-rich lymph trapped within the tissues. Oedema due to an injury, such as bumping into something, is caused by additional tissue fluid coming into the area to help with healing. If Oedema is left untreated for longer than 6 weeks, it has the potential to turn into Lymphoedema which is irreversible due to the damage to the lymphatic vessels

What is the difference between Lymphoedema and Lipedema?

Lymphoedema and lipedema (also known as lipoedema) are two distinct medical disorders even though both involve swelling in the arms and legs. In short, Lymphedema is a disorder of the lymphatic system and is commonly caused by dysfunction in the flow of lymph fluid through the arms or legs. Lipedema in contrast, does not involve the lymphatic system, but it is a pathologic, mostly symmetric deposition of fat that most often affects the lower extremities and almost exclusively occurs in women.

What is the difference between a deep tissue and remedial massage?

A deep tissue massage is a whole body treatment where as a remedial massage focuses on parts of the body that requires rehabilitation. Remedial massage first starts with a review of postural analysis, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Once the therapist understands the issues causing the injury or pain they will then perform a targeted massage of the area. While deep tissue massage requires firm pressure, the pressure used during remedial massage will vary depending on what is best for treating the specific issue.

Which conditions can benefit greatly from massage?

- Chronic muscle pain

- Injury rehabilitation and athletic recovery

- Repetitive strain injuries (RSIs) such as carpal tunnel syndrome

- Osteoarthritis

- Postural difficulties

- Tennis elbow

- Sciatica

- Limited mobility

- Lower back pain

- Breaking up scar tissue

In all of these instances the main aim of massage is to lessen discomfort and pain, as well as increasing your body’s capacity to heal itself.

Does a remedial massage hurt?

While you may feel a little tender from treating the area you should feel the benefit of greater mobility in the affected areas within a day or so. So is remedial massagestill relaxing? Absolutely!
